Finishes & Customization FAQs
Does Countryside offer stain matching?
The short answer is: YES.
Below is everything you need to know before obtaining a stain match.
- Determine if you need to match. Browse our stain selection in your chosen hardwood and see if any samples are even close to your existing pieces. When you place your order, we will send you up to four real wood samples for you to compare to your existing furniture. Samples usually arrive within 3-5 business days of your order and you may find exactly what you seek with our standard stains. If not, we may request a representative sample from you in order to create a custom stain.
- Consider the pieces of furniture involved. If you are matching dining chairs to an antique table, you are a good candidate for a stain match. If, however, you are matching a chest of drawers to a headboard that will likely never be in close proximity to one another, you may want to avoid the time and money required to go through the stain matching process.
- Let us know you will require stain matching for your solid wood furniture as soon as you know. The longer we delay the matching process, the longer your finished product will take.
- In order to match your stain, we need an exemplar. It is not sufficient to find a stain you like at your local home improvement store and tell us the name. Everything from the thickness applied to the time the stain is left in place can impact how the stain actually looks on a piece of wood. Send us a piece of your chosen wood species that has been stained in the color you are requesting. We will replicate the stain depth of your sample and our finishing shop will complete your furniture to that depth. A picture of a stain is also insufficient as lighting and pixel depths vary dramatically.
- Matching stains is not as simple as it would seem considering the age of the wood you may be attempting to match and the new lumber with which our shop is working. Some woods, like Oak, yellow a bit with time and Cherry notoriously reddens during the first year. We are extremely careful with our stain matching process, but we cannot guarantee that in 5 years our new wood will not have aged to a slight variation of the color on your older pieces. Our catalyzed conversion varnish, however, will remain clear and will not yellow.
- Stain matching takes time. You can expect the stain matching process to add 2-4 weeks to your timeline.
- There is an additional $200 charge for stain matching, and an additional $300 for paint matching. This process adds steps to the completion of your furniture and, therefore, adds costs for which we have not accounted in our standard pricing.
At Countryside, we want your handmade Amish furniture to be in your family for generations. We encourage you to have it as you like it. Stain matching is available for just this reason. Countryside is your home for authentic, custom Amish furniture from the heart of Amish Country.
How do I order two-tone furniture?
When making your purchase, define the primary stain. Later in the check-out, you’ll be asked to detail Special Instructions. Use this field to document the second stain. Don’t worry, a representative will then be in touch to confirm all elements of your orders. Upcharges for two-tone finishes are applied at the time of order processing (10% upcharge for two stains/20% upcharge for one stain and one paint).
How do I order a specialty finish?
At Countryside, a "specialty finish" is any finish that incorporates two tones, two woods, distressing, glazing, rub through, paint, brush marks, or a low sheen. You will find our specialty finishes listed with our regular stains with a green banner indicating the percentage of the upcharge associated with that finish. An upcharge is necessary due to the additional steps added to our typical finishing process in order to achieve the look you prefer. This percentage is based on the price of your piece and ranges from 10-30% depending on the complexity of the process. All finishes will be topped with a conversion varnish to protect your furniture no matter which type of stain or paint you choose.
To order a specialty finish, simply choose your wood species. Then, choose the finish you prefer. Samples may be requested at check out and if you wish to combine two stains not listed, you may also mention that in the comments at checkout.
What finish is used and is it durable?
What finish is used?
At Countryside, every piece of furniture is finished with the gold standard of fine furniture finish - Catalyzed Conversion Varnish.
Is it durable?
After the finish is fully cured, your varnish will provide long-term durability making your handmade furniture resistant to things such as water or a sweating glass, low heat, humidity, certain chemicals, cooking residue, and overall wear over time. While not indestructible, your Amish-made furniture will resist scratching and marring.
Is it safe?
Catalyzed Conversion Varnish meets federal standards for Low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Hazardous Air Pollutants Standards (HAPS) to ensure the product we use is safe for your family.
How do I select my fabric?
- We utilize the very best fabrics in the business. View our sample book to view Countryside’s options at Greenhouse fabrics where you may choose up to five swatches to receive before you make your final decision
- Make note of the name and number code of your selections (see sample below) and enter that information when you request samples at checkout.
- A9205 Taupe
- Your samples will be mailed to you and when you have decided your preference, you may call or email your selection to Countryside.

What kind of leather do you use?
We work exclusively with all-natural, full-grain leather. Genuine leather is strong and durable, yet soft and supple and develops a rich patina with age. If properly cared for, genuine leather upholstery should last generations. With 60+ color options, leathers are available in tan, red, gray, black, and nearly everything in between. Our collection of leather is rich with natural markings.
Can Countryside modify bed frames to accommodate specialty mattresses?
Yes! Our Amish craftsmen can modify the majority of our bed frame bases to help fit a Tempur-Pedic or similar mattress. Most adjustable mattresses with platforms can be placed inside a freestanding, hardwood bed frame (when slats are removed). We'll even provide you with the slats unattached in case you decide to use them at a later date.
Keep in mind, if the bed you are interested in has a platform or drawers, it would not be compatible with a free-standing mattress as it needs to be able to reach the floor directly.
To get started, please contact us via the Live Chat or email with the overall dimensions of your mattress and platform unit. Our sales staff can then verify if a standard bed will accommodate it, or if any modifications will need to be made.
Once confirmed, feel free to complete your order, remembering to include details under Special Requirements.
Can I modify the dimensions of chairs?
Altering the dimensions of our chairs is not recommended, as it can significantly compromise their ergonomic design, leading to increased discomfort. We suggest reaching out to us with your specific requirements, and our team will assist you in identifying a closely matched existing seat design that suits your needs.
We Offer Personalized Modifications Upon Request
While we offer a wealth of customization options within our product pages, we also can accommodate many special requests, including:
-
Custom dimensions
Do you need a table two inches longer than offered? Perhaps your desk requires extra knee room to fit a unique office chair. If you ask, chances are that we can make it happen!
-
Wood species not listed
Let us know if you find your dream furniture piece but it's not offered in your preferred wood species; we'll work hard to make your vision come true.
-
Adding (or removing) certain components
Perhaps you want to add a drawer to a coffee table or glass doors to shelving. We'll work closely with you to determine if your idea is possible!
-
Inclusion of special features
Let's say you find the perfect desk, but it doesn't have a designated drawer for your keyboard. Or perhaps you want your hutch to come with locks or touch lighting. Tell us in the chat, and we'll move mountains to customize your chosen piece as requested.
-
Modification of bed frames
We can adapt many of our bed frames (but not all) to accommodate a Tempur-Pedic or similar mattress, with the option to place adjustable mattresses within freestanding hardwood frames by removing the slats.
The best way to get the ball rolling on special furniture modifications is to reach out to our team using the Live Chat or our contact form, specifying the piece that caught your eye and how you'd like it uniquely tailored. Alternatively, if you have ideas but can't find the piece to match, our team can help you select the foundational design on which we build your vision.

What if my furniture arrives damaged?
We take great care to inspect your furniture as it leaves the builder to ensure your purchase arrives free of damage or flaws.
We inspect your order again when it is finished and one final time before we package it for delivery. However, for those rare imperfect conditions, your furniture is fully insured, and we will make it right. If your furniture arrives less than perfect, we will do everything in our power to repair or replace it. Please note any shipping damage on the delivery receipt and follow up with us either by phone or email. We ask that you inspect your furniture upon delivery and report any cosmetic damages such as scratches and dents at the time of delivery. Photos may assist this process. How is the furniture assembled?
Most items, like dressers, desks, sideboards, chairs, etc., will arrive at your home or office pre-assembled. Some pieces of furniture like beds, pedestal tables, feet, and legs need a 1/2 inch wrench or socket to assemble. Furniture like hutches and mirrors for dressers need to be attached with a phillips screwdriver. Assembly takes minutes and the joy will last for generations!

Common Questions About Made-to-Order Amish Furniture
What is Amish furniture?
The construction and finishing of our products differs from other furniture manufacturers. Our products are not mass-produced in a large furniture factory, but in small Amish-owned woodworking shops. We're a small family-owned business, and we value working with other family-owned establishments.

Is Amish furniture made by the Amish?
Yes! Amish does indeed mean Amish-made. Our artisans use time-tested construction methods and generations of expertise. There are three factors that go into our ability to produce original Amish furniture with premium quality:
- Culture & Experience: Countryside's Owner, Mel Stutzman, was raised Amish in a three-generation family business. He has years of experience starting off at the bottom of the ladder as a sander and gradually moving to finishing. Eventually he found himself the shop foreman, which lead him to the custom Amish-style cabinetry business. His hands-on learning experience has given him an intimate understanding of the Amish community and Amish business owners. This has allowed him to handpick the 50-plus small, legitimate Amish workshops where Countryside's furniture is handcrafted. It also allows him to communicate with the workshops with mutual respect and an expert level of knowledge of the building process and strictly hold them to a higher standard of excellence.
- High Standards: There is nothing more important to Mel than quality. All of our furniture is handcrafted strictly using solid wood construction. Each piece of wood in a piece of furniture is literally hand-selected by our craftsmen and critiqued to make sure it fits with the piece and our high level of quality. After our craftsmen have built the original piece, it is then sent to our finishing shop. Having one location for finishing allows us to guarantee that each piece has a consistent stain, and provides one more level of quality control, something that may not be present in another Amish furniture location. The human eye and hand has judged each piece of furniture hundreds of times before it arrives to our customer's door.
- Personalized Service: We pride ourselves on customers becoming a part of our family. Even though you can order your piece of Amish-style furniture online, we work with our customers on a one-on-one basis to make sure it is to the exact specifications and customization they desire. We are available Monday through Friday to answer your questions and assist you with your order of authentic Amish furniture. Our phone number isn’t just on our website for looks—we want you to call and we want to get to know you. And, if you’re in the neighborhood, we would love to have you stop in and visit our design center in Arthur, IL.
Is Amish furniture green?
Countryside sources only new growth forests for our solid wood furniture. This means that virgin forests are not destroyed or damaged and trees of significant size and age are protected. Further, sourcing only managed lands ensures enough old growth range exists to sustain wildlife, wilderness areas, and hiking trails. The irony of these efforts is that by managing the trees properly, limbs can be removed as the hardwoods grow which actually produces a higher quality wood for furniture making purposes. Extricated trees are then replaced after the soil has rested and is ready to produce another tree. Constantly observing the life cycles of these plants ensures not only their viability, but also that erosion, fire, and damaging insects can be averted.
Not all our stains, paints, finishes, and varnishes are organic, but they are "green". This simply means that every finish we use meets federal standards for Volatile Organic Compounds and Hazardous Air Pollutants. Details about our catalyzed conversion varnish top coat can be found here. Organic finishes are available on many of our items. No matter which finish you choose, your furniture from Countryside will not harm your home environment or the planet.
Why does my furniture finish need to cure?
The curing process allows the furniture finish to fully develop its strength, hardness, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance. Airflow is critical at this time and ensures the finish is able to crosslink with the oxygen in the air.
Every piece of furniture offered by Countryside is finished using a Catalyzed Conversion Varnish. This durable finish ensures your furniture will hold up to everyday use and is resistant to wear, residue, and moisture.
Can you send me a printed catalog?
Sorry! We do not maintain a printed catalog at this time. We are adding or updating products daily, making it impractical for us to maintain an accurate printed catalog.
If you are seeking information that's not available online, please contact us and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
Does Countryside sell furniture in sets?
Countryside Amish Furniture does not price collections as sets, but rather as individual pieces. Our set pages and images are presented more as possibilities so that you may design your home or business as you envision. All pieces in a furniture set may be purchased from the product page. This gives you the freedom to customize unique furniture collections, select preferred sizes, and determine which woods and finishes work best for your home. Will Amish-made beds work with adjustable mattresses?
Yes! We would be happy to work with you to accommodate your mattress. Depending on your mattress model and dimensions, along with your desired bed design, we may need to make some customizations. Most adjustable mattresses with platforms can be placed inside a freestanding, hardwood bed frame.
In order to get started, please provide us with the overall dimensions of your mattress and platform unit. Our sales staff can then verify if a standard bed will accommodate it, or if any modifications will need to be made.
If the bed you are interested in has a platform or drawers, it would not be compatible with a free-standing mattress as it needs to be able to reach the floor directly.
Shop our collections of Amish handmade beds, or contact Countryside Amish Furniture to begin!
Is there an organic finish available for nursery furniture?
Some of our cribs can be made from organic, chemical-free materials.
This particular finish does not have a gloss build up and will not come with color options. Also, this organic finish isn't a sealant like our other standard finishes. There will likely be porous areas in the wood on your crib. With the organic finish, your new crib will have the look of natural wood. Cherry, Hard Maple, and Oak will be the recommended wood types to use, due to the less porous nature of these.
Whether you select Organic or Standard methods, your baby furniture will meet or exceed all the requirements set by the federal safety guidelines.
